| Andrew and Almarié Murray developed the
Fakawi aluminium frame and canvas canopy in 1996 due to the
need for a lightweight canopy for their Land Rover pickup which
could easily be fitted or removed by two people . At that stage
there was no local manufacturers of such a product and the only
other option was to import the European equivalent, manufactured
in the UK, but due to the considerable cost of importing the
product which was inferior due to the heavy galvanised frame
and susceptible to rust, it was decided to develop their own.
The decision was made to develop an aluminium frame and canvas
canopy for own use. Their first canopy created so much interest
that they decided to start manufacturing the canopies commercially.
Since then the frame has been developed into a quality, versatile
product with the help of clients, which is produced as a standard
product for all Land Rovers and Land Cruiser pickups. A custom
product is available for all other pickups.
The frame is made from high-grade aluminium, which is assembled
using patented links, and not welded, as is the case with
most other products. Through the fitment of additional supports
the frame is strong enough to carry a roof rack or rooftop
tent. Stainless steel bolts and nylock nuts ensure a strong,
rust free, quality product.
The canopy is made from locally produced ripstop canvas and
is fitted as standard with two side windows per side and a
front window which can be opened. The rear and side windows
are fitted with canvas sun shades, which can be rolled up.
The two side panels and rear panel can be rolled up individually
or simultaneously which facilitates packing. A double flap
is sewn into the bottom strips of the canopy to protect the
vehicle from the metal eyelets through which the rope is strung.
A wind flap can be fitted between the cab roof and the canopy
to improve aerodynamics.
The total weight of an aluminium frame and canvas canopy
for a Land Rover 110 pickup is approximately 35kg.
